The Review:
Thanks to the magic of mega marketing campaigns, you are most likely going to see this movie no matter what I tell you about it but it's kind of what I do so here we go. Over the years of its existence, I have been quite fond of this franchise and it seems to get better and better with every new installment. Once again, the stakes are raised, the action is bigger, and Tom Cruise uses his witchcraft to put the fire out! Oh wait, that might be a different movie. Either way, he still does all of his own stunts which exponentially adds to the jaw dropping nature of pretty much every action scene in the movie.
Cruise may never win any gold trophies for acting, but he will go down in cinematic history as one of the biggest blockbuster action stars of all time. Right now, there really is no competition and what he does in this movie sets him farther apart from anyone who might be in the same stratosphere. At this point, there's something comforting about seeing him in this particular role as super spy Ethan Hunt really embodies Cruise's own sense of drive and determination. When you watch the movie, you still see Tom Cruise, but you also see Ethan Hunt whereas other movies you're just like oh yeah, that's Tom Cruise playing a character.
Another move forward, for the most part, is the roster of talent laid out to play alongside and against Cruise although I do wish Jeremy Renner had been able to come back but his duties saving the universe as a member of the Avengers just didn't allow time for it. After making her debut in the franchise's previous installment, Rebecca Ferguson further cements herself as a series mainstay with some seriously bad ass moments that would rival anything we've seen from Black Widow (another Avengers reference) or other female powerhouses like Kim Ok-bin in The Villainess or Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road.
As far as actors who do return from previous installments, we get the usual comic relief and teamwork from Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames and Alec Baldwin, Sean Harris, and Michelle Monaghan each reprise their roles as well. Making their debuts in the series are Angela Bassett, Vanessa Kirby, and Henry Cavill, each of whom really add a lot to the story and I would like to see them all continue on in the future. I'm assuming there will be more from the Mission Impossible Force at some point.
Have I mentioned the story yet? Not really, I suppose although it is quite entertaining and has all the crazy twists and turns you might expect. A few are predictable and a few will surprise you and it's all strung together nicely to give Cruise a reason to run, jump, fight, shoot, drive, fly, crash, and run some more. The fact of the matter is, the story is solid although nothing earth shattering which is fine. If you are watching a Mission Impossible movie for anything more than seeing amazing action scenes and incredible stunt work, you may be doing it wrong. Just a thought.
The Verdict:
Mission Impossible: Fallout is another big step forward for a franchise that is already leading the way in the big budget spy thriller action movie genre. Make sure you see this movie on the biggest screen you can find, it's definitely worth seeing in the theater.
