The Review:
This was a surprisingly fun movie that is definitely aimed for kids and families to watch. The story is based off of a children's book written by John Bellair in 1973 and has been adapted for the screen oddly enough by extreme horror specialist Eli Roth. I wasn't quite sure how Roth would do with this material since there is no cannibalism (The Green Inferno) or torture porn (Hostel) although everything is just fine as the film is filled with family friendly jokes and the requisite bathroom humor that comes along with it. One of my favorite things about this movie is the emphasis on how weird the boy is but that's perfectly okay and it's actually pretty cool.
Everything about the movie is just fine except for one thing. Cate Blanchett is absolutely indomitable. Every moment she is on screen is just magical which I suppose is quite fitting for a movie about magic. Whenever I hear her speak, I an't help but hear Galadriel which is not a bad thing at all. Her acting ability far outweighs anything else this movie has to offer yet she still manages to fit herself into the confines of the character and story while elevating all of it just because she's there. Everything else is just fine. Gather up the kids, if you have them, and go see this movie because why not. It's a fun time at the movies.
