The Review:
First time director Daniel Goldhaber has put together a very timely exploration into one of the more provocative pieces of the internet where girls put on live webcam shows in an effort to make money and cultivate a rabid fan base. Visually, the movie is beautifully shot with a neon color pallet that creates a hyper real backdrop that accentuates the story's online themes. Madeline Brewer, in the lead role as cam girl Lola, proves why she has had success in shows like Orange is the New Black and The Handmaid's Tale. She is super likable and added a lot of creativity to the role which made the movie itself more of an enjoyable experience. Where the movie really excels is in her exploration of the online persona versus who the character is in real life and the dangers of trying to maintain the separation of fiction and reality.
What is supposed to be a horror movie turns out to be a trip through the world of almosts. It is almost a psychological thriller, almost a slasher mystery, almost a paranormal horror movie, but really just ends up being almost a really good movie. Story angles involving a couple of Lola's and of course the mysterious hijacking of her page are left hanging without ever being fully explored or resolved which I guess could be part of the mystery and leaves things open if the creative team wants to go back in for more. Overall, the movie is entertaining and definitely worth a look for genre fans but the story could have used some fine tuning and a little more focus before going into production.
