TwoOhSix Picks - 2018 Ithaca Fantastik Film Festival

So, this is my first time covering the Ithaca Fantastik festival and I have to say it looks pretty freaking amazing. Packed with movies, music, and art, the ten day festival features "the most exciting and intriguing, mind-bending, beautiful, and flat out weird films from domestic and international filmmakers." Since I am covering the festival from home, my focus is on the films and I have chosen ten selections to be labeled as my "TwoOhSix Picks" for the 2018 Ithaca Fantastik Film Festival.

Cam - Directed by Daniel Goldhaber

Screenwriter Isa Mazzei draws from her own experiences working as a cam girl to create an intensely provocative experience alongside director Daniel Goldhaber.

Luz - Directed by Tilman Singer

Tilman Singer's debut feature film looks like it is packed with everything you want from a horror movie and I can't wait to see what this 70's throwback movie is going to unleash.

Mega Time Squad - Directed by Tim van Dammen

This movie reminds me of Deathgasm, another movie from New Zealand that was an amazing bit of genre film making. If this movie is half as crazy, it's going to be a blast.

One Cut of the Dead - Directed by Ueda Shinichiro

A low budget zombie movie within a low budget zombie comedy has to be one of the best ideas I've seen in a while. I can't say it enough, I love this movie. It made me so happy I cried. Seriously.

Piercing - Directed by Nicolas Pesce

This movie was also one of my picks for the North Bend Film Festival and the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival although I ended up not being able to see it. Looking forward to having another chance because I hear it's fantastic.

Prospect - Directed by Chris Caldwell and Zeek Earl

This award winning, locally made science fiction film has been playing at festivals all across the country and will be the opening night feature film for this year's festival.

Relaxer - Directed by Joel Potrykus

Are you ready for this movie? It's really weird and oddly captivating. I saw it recently at the North Bend Film Festival and I'm still trying to figure out what I saw. I think that's meant as a compliment.

The Rusalka - Directed by Perry Blackshear

In 2015, director Perry Blackshear meade his feature film debut with They Look Like People, a dark psychological thriller that makes me think this movie has a lot of potential to be super creepy and intense.

Starfish - Directed by A.T. White

This movie was featured during the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival's Centerpiece Gala so it must be good, right? A.T. White's feature debut promises an unparalleled horror movie experience that I can't wait to see.

The Unthinkable - Directed by Victor Danell

This movie is also known as Den blomstertid nu kommer which just sounds really freaking cool so this must be a good movie. Seriously though, the trailer shows an epic scale thriller that is perfectly suited to close out this festival.

Initially founded as a three-day film festival in 2012, the Ithaca Fantastik Festival has evolved, mutated, and grown a few new limbs… adding art shows with local and international creative minds, a concert series with Ithaca Underground, live Q&As with filmmakers and teams, and after parties where film talk and thoughtful debate go on late into the night.
