Piercing - 2018 Ithaca Fantastik Film Festival Movie Review

The Movie: Piercing

The Director: Nicolas Pesce

The Cast: Christopher Abbott, Mia Wasikowska, Olivia Bond, Laia Costa, Wendell Pierce

The Story: A man kisses his wife and baby goodbye and seemingly heads away on business, with a plan to check into a hotel, call an escort service, and kill an unsuspecting prostitute.

The Review:
This movie was very different than I thought it was going to be and definitely skews towards the weird which, in this case, is a very good thing. Nicolas Pesce is quickly becoming one of the more interesting genre directors of late with both this film and his previous effort The Eyes of My Mother being the type of horror movies that get into your head and stick with you.

This definitely is a horror movie but not the scary ghost or monster kind, it is more of a psychological thriller that puts you inside the head of two people who have some serious issues and then shows you what happens when you put them in the same room together. For Mia Wasikowska, this is about as far of a departure as can be from the types of films she is known for although I would have to say it is also some of her best work to date. You can tell she is having fun with the role as she does everything she can to create an unpredictably unstable persona that can go toe to toe with Christopher Abbott's equally enigmatic character.

Piercing blends psychological horror with some wickedly dark humor. It is filled with twists and turns that aren't just the standard tropes and plot devices you might expect, it's more like eating a particular dish for the first time not knowing what the ingredients are but as you take each bite, you discover something new that makes you sit up and take notice.

Piercing is an official selection of the 2018 Ithaca Fantastik Film Festival.
