The Review:
Up until this movie was about to be released, I knew nothing about the original film which came out in 1977 so this was all brand new to me. Not knowing what to expect may have helped me to enjoy it as much as I did because if I had known it would be a long, dry, slow burn of a story, I might not have made it all the way through and I had already been a bit nervous about the two and a half hour run time. Another thing that saves the movie from falling into ruin is the cast which was actually quite brilliant. This is the first time I have really noticed Dakota Johnson as a viable actress as she jumped head first into a very difficult character and came out with a really solid effort.

Other standout performances come from two women who specialize in standout performances. Chloƫ Grace Moretz and Tilda Swinton. The former only has a small part but she gets the absolute most out of every moment and the latter imbues her character with that unique style and personality she is known for. Not as outlandish as some of her work but still one of the better performances of the film.

You ever find yourself up way too late at night with the TV on a channel you didn't know it was on and there is some strange, and most likely foreign, film that has you completely lost but you decide to watch it anyway? Yeah, me too. This is one of those movies and fortunately, if you are willing to sit through over two hours of not so exciting build up, the payoff is actually quite entertaining.

Throughout the film there is a hinted at element of either the paranormal or some other mysterious forces at play and then all of sudden, it goes balls to the wall psycho and you will sit there either in shock or completely bewildered or maybe even ecstatic over what your eyes just absorbed into your brain. This isn't really a horror movie although it kind of is because of where it ends up. It isn't very scary, it will just leave you kind of creeped out and probably happy to see the credits finally begin to roll.
