TwoOhSix Recap - My Saturday Adventure at GeekGirlCon

Getting to spend one day at the 2018 GeekGirlCon was a pleasure and quite the treat. The event was held at the Washington State Convention Center in downtown Seattle on October 27th and 28th and was filled with panels, discussions, costumes, celebrity guests, vendors, artists, escalators, and culture fans of all ages. Since my time was limited, I wanted to focus on checking out the vendors and artists while fitting in a couple of the panels.

The first thing I decided to do was wander the vendor and artist area to get an idea of what was being offered and what I found was a very impressive selection of creative and diverse products ranging from art work to cosplay gear and everything in between. Most everything I ran across was hand made or carefully crafted in ways that would take a lot more talent than I possess. Hello Kitty! I really liked the little black and orange one.

After my wandering was complete, I headed over to where I would be watching a panel on the women of Game of Thrones and, as I arrived, there was a Disney sing-a-long show going on. Of course, I had to head on in and take a seat and it was so much fun seeing how engaged everyone was singing along to every single word of every single song, it was quite a treat. The hosts were really into it and they had to be during this non stop barrage of songs like "I'll Make a Man Out of You" from Mulan, "I Just Can't Wait to Be King" from The Lion King, and of course "Let it Go" from Frozen.

After that, the "So Different Yet Still the Same: The Women of Game of Thrones" panel wasn't quite as exciting but it was informative and worth sitting through. The six panel members each picked one female character from the show to discuss and then there was a random discussion about a bunch of the other female characters. I can't say there was any ground breaking insight but it was nice to hear people's thoughts about how each character was treated by the writers and directors for better or worse.

One of the best things about any culture convention is getting to see all of the amazing costumes worn by men and women of all ages and backgrounds. Seeing what and who inspires people and the lengths they go to recreate that magic within themselves is always a sight to behold. To be honest, I was so busy enjoying them all, I kept forgetting to ask for photos. Below is a small sample of the many cosplays I saw during the day and also a great example of the diversity that GeekGirlCon attracts and embraces. Everyone is welcome and everyone is welcome to be their fully expressed selves whether in costume or not.
