The Story: A group of college freshmen pledge an exclusive fraternity but soon realize there's more at stake than they could have ever imagined.
The Review:
Pledge is pretty much every college student's worst nightmare and no, the movie has nothing to do with cleaning supplies. Director Daniel Robbins and writer Zack Weiner have taken a classic university ritual and right of passage and turned it into a gateway to some basement based torture pron. To be honest the torture porn aspect is a bit tame with more gross than gore but it's still effective and presented in a very entertaining way.
The key here is the fun cast of characters that plays off of Revenge of the Nerds style stereotypes and ends up flipping them around by the time the movie is over. The three primary roles as seen above are played by Zachery Byrd, Phillip Andre Botello, and Zack Weiner (also the aforementioned writer) as the misguided pledges who end up facing some seriously unexpected terrors. On the other side are Aaron Dalla Villa, Cameron Cowperthwaite, Jesse Pimentel as the frat boys with a hidden agenda. All six young men go all in with over the top performances that really sell the comic absurdity on display and creates a nice balance for the more extreme horror side of the story.
At just under an hour and twenty minutes long, Pledge excels in its efficiency and doesn't get lost in trying to tell too much story. The scares are real, the laughs are legit, and the antics are much more than academic making this a genre title you'll want to sign up for.
