The Review:
Full disclosure: I have never read Stephen King's novel that this movie was adapted from or the original 1989 adaptation and really knew nothing about the story at all. I honestly thought it was going to be some kind of attack of the killer pets type movie but no they had to hit me with something completely different. There are strong elements of family, good versus evil, the afterlife or lack thereof, and each is explored in very creative ways.
The story is a lot more cerebral than I was expecting and there are little to no special effects or crazy creatures other than the family's cat who experiences an interesting transformation that becomes the jumping off point for all the craziness and horror type theatrics. I've always been a fan of Jason Clarke and he turns in another solid performance as the dad who will do anything to keep his family together. John Lithgow does a good job playing the old dude with good intentions who makes some bad decisions and Amy Seimetz is the mother figure who's past literally comes back to haunt her.
The Verdict:
Pet Sematary is creepy, kind of scary, and one of the better Stephen King adaptations you will find. I on't know how it stacks up to the book or the previous movie, but I enjoyed it so there's that.
