The Review:
What if, as a teenager, Superman decided to be a dick and use his powers for destruction instead of for truth, justice, and the American way. That's basically what this movie is. Director David Yarovesky, along with the writing team of Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn, combines the origin story blueprint of super hero movies with the gruesome body count and jump scares of the horror genre. The origin story portion of the movie is about as predictable as you might expect and borrows heavily from the aforementioned Man of Steel leaving the scares and kills to take center stage.
The way people die in this movie is reminiscent of the Final Destination movies although it idn't destiny or a supernatural force in play this time around. The kills are creative and quite gruesome with smashed and mangled body parts strewn all over the place so be prepared for a fair amount of blood and gore. I really liked Elizabeth Banks (full disclosure: I always like Elizabeth Banks) as the overly dedicated mother as well as David Denman who is as solid of a performer as you will find.
Brightburn is definitely not your run of the mill super hero origin story and is not kid friendly in any way, shape, or form. While the story is fairly predictable, the film makers crush it when playing with the horror side of the genre mash up. if nothing else, this movie would make a great double feature with Overlord, last year's WWII horror movie mash up from JJ Abrams.
