Who Let the Dogs Out - SIFF 2019 Documentary Review

The Documentary: Who Let the Dogs Out

The Director: Brent Hodge

The Story: The story behind the song "Who Let the Dogs Out," which became a hit for the Bahamian group Baha Men in 1998.

The Review:
My first introduction to the iconic pop tune Who Let the Dogs Out was while working for the Seattle Mariners as it was the music played when Alex Rodriguez would come up to bat. It became his theme song and a rallying cry for the success the team had over a two year period. After it caught on in Seattle, the song became a global sensation and perpetual arena and stadium anthem that is still played to crowds during sporting events around the world. Who knew there would be such a controversy and mystery surrounding the song's creation.

Director and self proclaimed Who Let the Dogs Out expert Brent Hodge has invested more time into this topic than anyone probably ever should, but the resulting documentary is both informative and entertaining. The film is built around a presentation Hodge has created and built up from the wealth of knowledge and history he has amassed over the years including conversations with a seemingly never ending roster of musical talent (term used loosely) who have all laid claim to the creation of a song that is the epitome of irresistibility.

While no definitive answer may or may not ever be reached when it comes to knowing exactly who was first to let the dogs out, we can now at least have a bit of fun with Hodge and his whimsical journey of unexpected discovery. Come for the music, stay for the laughs, just don't miss out on this fun little dog-umentary.

Who Let the Dogs Out is an official selection of the 2019 Seattle International Film Festival.
