Ten Years Thailand - SIFF 2019 Movie Review

The Movie: Ten Years Thailand

The Directors: Aditya Assarat, Wisit Sasanatieng, Chulayarnnon Siriphol, Apichatpong Weerasethakul

The Cast: Boonyarit Wiangnon, Kidakarn Chatkaewmanee, Tanasawan Thepsatorn, Sakda Kaewbuade

The Story: Four directors from Thailand are asked to tackle an important social or political issue and imagine how it will play out ten years into the future.

The Review:
This is a very strange, experimental anthology which brought together a group of directors to give their take on social or political issues, apparently in the most abstract way possible. Each film was deeply rooted in science fiction and/or fantasy and all of it was way out there in style, scope, ideas, and technique.

While I appreciate the creativity and effort involved, I have to say that none of the segments really grabbed me in a way that could keep me engaged for any length of time. Maybe the cultural specifics weren't as relevant or relatable for me and I want to give the film the benefit of the doubt because I always love it when filmmakers push boundaries and show off new ideas.

Ten Years Thailand is an official selection of the 2019 Seattle International Film Festival.
