The Movie: Dreadout
The Director: Kimo Stamboel
The Cast: Marsha Aruan, Caitlin Halderman, Susan Sameh
The Story: Social media obsessed teenagers accidentally open a portal to a magical world where supernatural creatures and other horrible things exist.
The Review:
Talk about a spooky, crazy, scary movie! Combining teenagers love of all things social media with a demonic horror movie of course makes a lot of sense although I wish there had been more of a direct correlation between the two. Kimo Stamboel's latest effort is a fun romp through the genre that accomplishes what it sets out to do in a surprisingly entertaining way. There is a lot of stuff that we have seen over and over in past films and nothing in this movie is highly original but I felt like the story had a nice history to it and created a new legend that we could all be scared of.
The demon lady was definitely a force to be reckoned and was quite scary to be honest. Her penchant for stretching out her mouth and oozing a thick, blood like substance out of it while hovering over someone's face was pretty gross and not something you would want to experience. Lead actress Caitlin Halderman was a lot of fun as Linda who shows flashes of brilliance by really lighting up most of her scenes and I believe, based on her social media, she may have something in the works with Disney so stay tuned I hope. (There are puns in that last sentence that you will get after watching the movie)
Dreadout puts a modern, youthful spin on classic genre material and comes away with a very entertaining entry into the horror genre. Caitlin Halderman makes her mark as a potential scream queen and director Kimo Stamboel further cements himself as an up and coming film maker to watch.
Dreadout is an official selection of the 2019 Fantasia International Film Festival.
