Idol (우상) - Fantasia 2019 Movie Review

The Movie: Idol (우상)

The Director: Lee Su-jin

The Cast: Sul Kyung-gu, Han Seok-kyu, Chun Woo-hee,

The Story: A man attempts to solve the mystery of his son's murder while a politician seeks to hide it.

The Review:
Oh man, there are so many layers to this movie, I don't even know where to begin. There is mystery, drama, political intrigue, family struggles, murder, espionage, cover ups, and just about eveything in between. The movie was written and directed by Lee Su-jin who I never would have guessed had only made one feature film before this one. The dexterity and confidence in being able to take on a complicated story like this with so many layers is quite impressive and how he expertly weaves everything together is quite the achievement in film making.

Of course, a movie is only as good as its cast and I don't know if a better roster of talent could have been found to fill all the characters in this movie. While Han Seok-kyu and Sul Kyung-gu deliver outstanding performances and take up the most screen time, I was actually most impressed with Chun Woo-hee who brought a combination of subtlety and intensity that really drove home the explosive climax of the movie. At 144 minutes, Idol is an investment in time, but Lee Su-jin delivers an intensely thrilling story and the payoff is well worth the effort.

Idol is an official selection of the 2019 Fantasia International Film Festival.
