The Story: Luz, a young cabdriver, drags herself into the brightly lit entrance of a run-down police station. A demonic entity follows her, determined to finally be close to the woman it loves.
The Review:
Tilman Singer's first feature film is super creepy and intense and is the type of horror film that pushes the genre in new directions while honoring some of its most iconic predecessors like Cronenberg and Argento. The pacing and visual style are the most evocative aspects of the movie, which was shot entirely on 16mm film, although it is such a unique vision that it never feels like it's copying any of its influences.
Luana Velis, who plays the title character, shows off a pretty impressive range while being asked to take on some unique challenging material although I was actually most impressed with Jan Bluthardt's performance as the doctor tasked with interrogating the demonically possessed cab driver because he goes through some seriously messed up stuff over the course of the movie. The entire mood of the story is built off of these two performances and Singer takes full advantage of their talents by playing them off of each other and intertwining their individual arcs
If you like your horror movies extra moody, super creepy, and downright scary then Luz is the film for you. When I say that it's a scary movie, I don't mean jump scares and cheap tricks, I mean there's an uneasiness that gets under your skin and stays there long after the movie is over. The run time is just over an hour which I felt was perfect for this story. Singer gets right to the point, throws a boatload of WTF moments right at your face and then leaves you wanting more. Horror fans, this is a no brainer and a must see as soon as you get the chance.
