The Movie: Stare 『シライサン』
The Director: Hirotaka Adachi
The Cast: Marie Iitoyo, Yu Inaba, Shota Sometani
The Story: If you listen to the story and you know her name, she will find you and kill you.
The Review:
Japan has so many creepy creatures that will stalk you and hunt you down and kill you that one might think everyone there is destined to die some gruesome, supernatural death and now we have Shirai-san to add to that long and illustrious list. Instead of watching a video or chanting some phrase to be terminally tracked by a gruesome ghoul or ghastly ghost, all you have to do is listen to someone tell you the story of Shirai-san and once you know her name, you're pretty much done for. Eventually she will find you, make you really scared, and then explode your eyeballs right out of your skull.
If you think this sounds like a fun movie and you love Japanese horror or the genre in general then you will most likely enjoy this movie. It really doesn't do anything we haven't seen before and safely follows the genre blueprint for success without much deviation. It helps that I liked the actors in the movie and didn't want to see their characters die so that made it a little more engaging as well. Overall this movie is just sort of there. There's nothing bad about it at all I enjoyed it quite a bit, but it also doesn't do much to push the genre forward or give you anything you weren't already expecting.
