Ready or Not - Movie Review

The Movie: Ready or Not

The Directors: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett

The Cast: Samara Weaving, Adam Brody, Mark O’Brien, Henry Czerny, Andie MacDowell

The Story: A bride's wedding night takes a sinister turn when her eccentric new in-laws force her to take part in a terrifying game.

The Review:
There are several different types of horror movies that exist including ones that make you scream from terror, ones that make you scream with laughter, and ones that make you scream from excitement. This movie manages to do all three while also being one of the most exciting, unpredictable, and enjoyable movies of the year so far. If you're looking for a comparison, I would probably point to You're Next as the closest in tone and a style that is heavy on attitude and even heavier on bloodshed and body counts. I also thought a lot about Clue, one of the all time classic comedies, while watching the film especially the ensemble cast and dark humor sprinkled throughout.

The thing I like most about the story is that it has so many familiar elements and yet the writing team of Guy Busick and Ryan Murphy have found a way to make it all so fresh and original. There are obvious inspirations but nothing that feels copied or overdone and that is a really hard thing to do in a genre that is constantly turning out new variations of just about every idea that's ever been done. While Tarantino has given us Uma Thurman as the most bad ass and iconic bride in cinema history, Samara Weaving as Grace definitely holds her own and creates one of the most likable and unexpectedly deadly women in a wedding gown I have ever seen.

The rest of the cast is so much fun to watch and they all play off of each other so well I can only imagine how much of a crazy good time it must have been on set each day. Adam Brody, Henry Czerny, Andie MacDowell, and Melanie Scrofano all stood out to me and especially Scrofano whose character is so drugged up and drunk she manages to do nothing be leave an unintentional path of destruction behind her everywhere she goes. Most of the comedy in the movie comes from the dysfunctional interactions between the family members along with their inability to execute an execution.

While there is plenty of comedy to keep you entertained, you will also want to be prepared for some seriously shocking moments with surprises around every corner and so many twists and turns, most of them leading to blood soaked disasters and bone crunching mishaps. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett seemed to take great pleasure in coming up with creative ways to kill off as many people as they could. Even Grace gets to experience some seriously cringe worthy injuries one of which really nailed it when it came to getting a reaction from the audience.

The Verdict:
Ready or Not is a crowd pleasing thriller that revels in its devilry and delights in its depravity. The movie turned out to be exactly what I was hoping for and I can't wait to watch it at least a few more times. Genre buffs and horror fans this is without question a must see film although I feel like even casual movie goers will get a kick out of it so get out there, grab some popcorn, and get ready to have a great time.at the movies.
