First let me just say this. I am now officially declaring the Fantasia International Film Festival to be my favorite film festival that I have had the opportunity to cover over the last eight years. The selection of genre films suits my tastes perfectly and the only thing that could have been better is if I could have watched more than the twenty six movies I watched during the festival. All other festivals are on notice. It's time to step up your game.
The crazy collage of movie posters you see above these words represents all of the movies I watched during the festival and now I suppose this is the part of my recap post where I pick out favorites. Out of the twenty six films, I am going to give you the ten that you don't want to miss. Look for them in theaters, on demand, on home video, or however you choose to find them just make sure you watch them. They are the cream of the crop.
Ten Must Watch Movies from Fantasia Fest:
Chiwawa
Beautifully filmed and expertly crafted, this is an unexpectedly complex story filled with moments and characters that will stick with you for a long time. (Review)
The Divine Fury
Holy demons, this movie seriously just blew my mind! If this is what South Korean genre film making looks like then I will be here for all of it. (Review)
The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil
An intriguing, action packed, and entertaining crime thriller that delivered exactly what I was looking for and is a great vehicle for Don Lee to further his career as a viable action star. (Review)
Harpoon
This movie, is sick, twisted, and gratuitously violent. Oh and I loved every moment of it. (Review)
House of Hummingbird
I really can't say enough about this movie and how it just penetrates your soul in a very cathartic way and leaves you emotionally exhausted but with a feeling of absolute satisfaction. (Review)
The Incredible Shrinking Wknd
An intense and intriguing fantasy that never feels repetitive or derivative and features one of the more interesting female lead performances I have seen in some time. (Review)
Kingdom
All the stuff you expect is there with epic battles, beautiful landscapes, armies of warriors, and all the drama you could shake a sword at. (Review)
The Legend of the Stardust Brothers
After 30 years people are finally realizing just how good it is, how funny it is, how bat shit crazy it is, how relevant it is, and just how genius it is. (Review)
No Mercy
A relentless roller coaster of cinematic action filled with broken bones and shattered dreams as Lee Si-young leaves a trail of blood, destruction, and sweet satisfaction in her revenge fueled path. (Review)
Porno
It's funny, it's scary, it's excessive, it's indulgent, it's smart, and it is filled with non stop gore, nudity, blood, sex, demons, and mind blowing hilarity. (Review)Ten Must Watch Movies from Fantasia Fest |
