The Review:
One of my favorite types of movies is when you an't really define it by a single genre or put it in any sort of box because these are usually the most creating and inventive movies you will find. Villains absolutely fits the bill as it has elements of horror, comedy, thriller, and probably a dozen other categories as well. First and foremost this movie, in all of it's twisted and insane glory, is fun with engaging performances from the entire cast and a script that is inventive and filled with shocking moments around every corner.

After watching the movie, I was talking to a friend of mine and we both agreed that it's about time for Bill Skarsgård to become a major star. His performance in this movie is unexpectedly engaging and he really puts in some major work to make a petty, low life criminal as sweet and likable as he could possibly be. Skarsgård has been recently moving up the ranks of Hollywood actors with his recent performance as Pennywise in It as well as the soon the be released sequel. Pairing him up with Maika Monroe was also a brilliant casting move as she is also a star on the rise, check her out in the brilliant It Follows, and she seems to have stepped her game up a bit for this movie as well.

As if those stellar performances aren't enough, we also get some totally out there and surprisingly whacked out performances from Jeffrey Donovan and Kyra Sedgwick who play a psychotically sadistic married couple who have been living a life of lies and deception for way too long. I was especially impressed with Sedgwick who shows a completely new side of her acting abilities wit a role like this. I mean, we've always knows she is a great actress, but this movie allows her to really break free with some stuff we've never seen from her before.

Kyra Sedgwick and Jeffrey Donovan in Villains (2019)

The Verdict:
Villains is a dark, twisted, and sadistic comedy that pits criminals against criminals and raises the level of hilarious craziness to all new heights. Filled with fantastic performances and a roller coaster of a home invasion story, this movie is destined to become a cult comedy classic.

Villains is an official selection of the 2019 North Bend Film Festival.
