The Story: A love story between a snake spirit and a snake hunter.
The Review:
This movie is about as beautiful of an animated feature as you will see. The creators definitely know how to take full advantage of China's landscapes, architecture, and history to bring all the stunning views to glorious life. My eyes were glued to every second of the film just to make sure no small detail would be missed although I would love to watch it again to explore more of the natural and mystical beauty on display.
The story is also worthy of repeat viewings as there is so much going on, so much mythology and legend that is explored, and of course it is a timeless love story as well. I was really intrigued by all the different fantasy elements at play with demons, gods, snakes, demons who are snakes, and all kinds of other crazy stuff. The story definitely had the classic heroes journey element to it with some vague similarities to The Odyssey and Clash of the Titans and even a bit of Titanic's doomed lovers story sprinkled in.
White Snake takes a centuries old legend and transforms it into a visual feast. Chinese folklore has never looked this good and, even f you have seen this story in all its other various forms, you won't want to miss out on this highly entertaining animated achievement.
