The Review:
Ma Dong-Seok aka Don Lee continues his march towards action movie dominance. The last few years has seen him featured in a steady stream of action movies where he beats people up in very blunt and violent ways. The cameras take full advantage of his stature and screen presence to create a character who is physically imposing and willing to take control. What's interesting is how just about all of his characters, including this one, tend to be from the criminal underworld yet also have a heart and at least some level of common sense about them.
For the most part, this movie is a pretty standard South Korean underworld, drug lord, action movie with the one twist being that it's bad guys versus bad guys although we've already seen the super villain version with Suicide Squad so nothing new really. The best action sequence happens at the beginning of the movie when a big truck takes on a prison bus on the highway and then all heck breaks loose with lots of shooting, punching, kicking, and all that fun stuff. The rest of the fight scenes are pretty standard and also nothing we haven't seen before.
Basically what I'm saying here is that the sole purpose of this Bad Guys movie is to feature Don Lee as an action superstar and I am perfectly okay with that because it works and the movie is a lot of fun. The ending also leaves things wide open for future installments which I'm sure are on the way and I'll be here for all of them.
