The Review:
The story of Harriet Tubman is a very interesting one and an important piece of American history to know and understand. I learned a lot about this amazing woman whole watching the movie as it goes into great detail on who she was and who she became over the course of her life. Her strength, determination, and her unshakable faith were the driving forces behind what made her such a great person.
One of the things that concerns me about the movie is that, while there is plenty of information, there was really no emotional engagement to the events or the characters, it's all just sort of there. Sure, I enjoyed the movie and learned a lot, I just don't feel like anything about it was very memorable emotionally impactful in any way. Other than that, the production is solid and the acting is good with a standout performance from Cynthia Erivo as Tubman as well as a fantastic supporting performance from Janelle Monáe who once again proves she needs to be in that A list category of star performers.
Harriet is an informative historical film that doesn't pack much of an emotional punch. Worth watching if you want to learn about one of the more important women in American history.
