The Review:
Hollywood movie director Roland Emmerich is known for making epic scale blockbuster films that are bulging at the seams with outlandish special effects and stories that are held together by some very loose threads. The entertainment value is always high because of the spectacle that takes place on gigantic theater screens even if the gold paved pathway is riddled with plot holes along the way.

Movies like Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, and 2012 are super fun to watch as long as you don't think too hard about logic and continuity and they represent the peak of Emmerich's abilities as a director. The director unfortunately has been on a bit of a downward spiral ever since the mega flop Independence Day sequel failed in it's attempt at a resurgence for the franchise and now here we are. We have the historical war movie remake, Midway, a film that reaches much farther into the WWII theater than just that one battle.

For me the whole thing was one giant disappointment and that was with low expectations firmly in place going in. The special effects look like a video game, the editing doesn't make sense, and the acting is awful which is partly due to the bad editing. There was no emotion, no character development, and no reason to care about any of it. This was basically the most expensive and elaborate reenactment video ever made.

I get that these are the real stories as told by the real men who were there and the film makers took great efforts to bring those stories to life in a very accurate way. I just feel like the excesses of Emmerich's film making style were not a good match for telling this particular story in this particular way.
