The Movie: Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool
The Director: Stanley Nelson
The Story: Miles Davis: Horn player, bandleader, innovator. Miles was a singular force of nature, the very embodiment of cool. The central theme of Miles Davis' life, and of this film is Davis' restless determination to break boundaries and live life on his own terms.
The Review:
I have never been a big follower of jazz so my knowledge of the genre doesn't go much farther than the samples used by hip hop producers of the 80's and 90's. Of course, Miles Davis is a household name so I do know who he is although, before watching this documentary, I wouldn't have been able to tell you much about him.
Stanley Nelson's ultra informative documentary about jazz's number one innovator and primary icon is just that, informative. Nelson packs Davis' entire career into just under two hours of screen time and we get to see the classic life of a rock star musician play out over the course of his troubled life. Having watched the film, I have a much higher appreciation of the man and his music although I can't say that the film itself really had me emotionally engaged. It's worth watching and, as I mentioned very informative and that's really about it.
