The Movie: Moon Hotel Kabul
The Director: Anca Damian
The Cast: Florin Piersic Jr., Florin Ghioca, Alexandru Nagy, Rodica Negrea
The Story: An investigative journalist who bends the truth finds his reality shaken after a translator who he had a one night stand with ends up dead the following day.
The Review:
The story is a methodically paced political drama that is highlighted by a stellar performance from Florin Piersic Jr. who plays Ivan, the investigative journalist. His journey over the course of the movie is an interesting one as we see so many different sides to the type of person he is. In the beginning we see a man who will break rules both professionally and in his personal life seemingly for nothing but selfish gain although, as the story unfolds, we begin to see a nobility and character that is unwavering in defense of his fallen colleague.
Director Anca Damian fills the movie with a lot of timely and topical points that speak volumes about the political climate in Romania and how it affects every aspect of daily life from economics and oppression to military rule and freedom of the press or lack thereof. To be honest, a lot of the more subtle nuances probably flew right past me since I'm sitting here in a relatively comfortable state on the other side of the world but I get the general idea that there is a lot of work to be done to guarantee basic freedoms and a standard of living for the population.
Moon Hotel Kabul is an official selection of the 2019 Romanian Film Festival.
