The Review:
Okay so let's take three powerhouse actresses, put them in a politically charged dramatic feature, stir as needed, then sit back and watch the glorious trifecta of venomously potent performances play out on screen. That pretty much sums up this movie. Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, and Margot Robbie are individually and collectively brilliant in this movie as their pulled from the real world characters look to take down one of the biggest power players in American media and politics.
If you'e not familiar with the story of how FOX news employees Megyn Kelly and Gretchen Carlson stood up to the sexual harassment and misogynistic culture that was embodied by CEO Roger Ailes, Jay Roach's dramatic feature is a great way to get yourself acquainted. Your political leanings may affect your level of enjoyment with this movie as it digs deep into how media controls the political landscape and especially during the time when Donald Trump was on a path straight to the oval office.
The action of Ailes, played by John Lithgow, were inexcusable, despicable, and downright disgusting so seeing his downfall was a rather gratifying experience. Behind that though are layers of subtext that pull back the curtain on just how much power men like Rupert Murdoch have in the grand scheme of things. Director Jay Roach takes the opportunity to show how much of a powerless figurehead Trump really is versus the people behind the scenes who are pulling the puppet strings and controlling the population through media programming.
Bombshell is a lot to take in and is at times difficult to digest. The magic is in the performances with Kidman, Theron, and Robbie clearly leading the way.
