The Review:
Last year I watched a horror movie where a red dress was the villain of the story and I loved it which might tell you something about my taste in movies. Richard Stanley's latest effort features the color purple as the main antagonist in a story where everything pretty much goes ape poop after a meteorite crashes into a field near a family's countryside farm house. Where they are raising alpacas. Because of course they are. And if that's not a wonderful premise for a movie I don't know what is. Add in the fact that Nicolas Cage is in the movie and you start to see where this is all going.
Yes, things get crazy, ridiculous, and crazy ridiculous and, even through all the ridiculous craziness, I actually felt like it could have gone even farther. I know the director essentially has to stick with the story as initially told by the one and only HP Lovecraft but I feel like the visual medium of film making could have allowed for a bit of artistic stretching here and there. Also, with all the craziness going on, this is the perfect type of movie for Nicolas Cage to let loose and get nuts like he has been known to do of late and yet I felt like he could have done a lot more with the character as well. That being said, he is still extremely entertaining and especially as his character succumbs to the strange and powerful forces at work in the movie.
As I mentioned, this movie is adapted from a story originally written by iconic genre author HP Lovecraft and I hate to say that while I have never read any of his work, watching the movie definitely has me interested in diving in. His works have informed and inspired so much of the horror, fantasy, and science fiction worlds, it's hard to imagine what it would all be like without his influence. Seeing this movie unfold in full Lovecraft glory was quite a treat as it goes serious deep dive into both horror and science fiction and it is a glorious thing to behold.
The Verdict:
Color Out of Space is a wild ride filled with bold imagery, vivid colors, and Nicolas Cage. Genre fans, you're going to love this movie, I just wish it had gone even farther off the deep end than it already did. If you don't see this playing at your local theater, tell them how much you need to see this movie.
