Shoot to Marry - 2020 Slamdance Documentary Review

The Documentary: Shoot to Marry

The Director: Steve Markle

The Story: A heartbroken documentary filmmaker focuses his camera on interesting women with hopes of meeting the love of his life.

The Review:
I found this documentary to be uncomfortably and uncannily relatable considering my own experiences in the world of dating and I don't really mean that in a bad way. The project came about after the director's fiance decided their engagement was a bad idea so he set off to find a new partner by conducting interviews with women who he deemed to be sufficiently interesting. Watching Steve bumble his way through interactions with all of the different women brought back so many memories, especially when he narratively expressed what was going through his head during those moments as they got more and more awkward and then, more often than not, tumbled into failure.

The way Markel tells the story is very entertaining and he comes across in a genuinely earnest manner as he searches for that special someone to spend the rest of his days with. Using a whimsical narrative that constantly pokes fun at his own insecurities, the director keeps things moving along by navigating through the different interactions with women from all different backgrounds. Ultimately, Shoot to Marry is a commentary on how we communicate and especially when it comes to interactions between men and women as they first get to know each other. I liked it. It's funny and relatable. It's basically a romantic comedy documentary. Check it out when you have the chance.
