Abe - Movie Review

The Movie: Abe

The Director: Fernando Grostein Andrade

The Cast: Noah Schnapp, Seu Jorge, Dagmara Dominczyk, Arian Moayed

The Story: Abe is a 12-year-old boy from Brooklyn who cooks to unite his half Israeli and half Palestinian family, but everything goes wrong.

The Review:
I would initially describe this movie as a mildly entertaining, kid friendly movie that also packs a fair amount of messaging into its story although I'm not sure how well the final meal turned out with such a strange combination of ingredients. Director Fernando Grostein Andrade takes a pretty safe route by sticking to the classic coming of age type formula, I just got a bit confused whenever he decided to mix in a heavy dose of religious banter between the family members. And when I say banter, I mean heated exchanges that damaged the entire family dynamic.

I feel like there is actually two really good stories that could have been that were for some reason mashed together into one. I love the moments when Abe, played by Noah Schnapp from Stranger Things, is off learning how to cook and trying to figure out his place in the world. The interaction he has with Seu Jorge's chef/mentor character is really good stuff and I wish that could have been one movie. It's light hearted and upbeat and reminds me in a lot of ways of Jon Favreau's Chef. Watching them make different foods and creating new things is a mouthwatering and delicious looking good time.

The cinematography is really well done especially when it comes to the food and the preparation of said food and there's also some really nice shots of New York city as backdrops. Shout out to cinematographer Blasco Giurato for some solid work overall. Overall, Abe is a good movie that doesn't seem quite sure what type of movie it wants to be. That being said, it's definitely worth a look so check it out if you have the chance.
