Why Don't You Just Die! - Movie Review

The Movie: Why Don't You Just Die!

The Director: Kirill Sokolov

The Cast: Aleksandr Kuznetsov, Vitaliy Khaev, Evgeniya Kregzhde, Michael Gor, Elena Shevchenko

The Story: Andrei, a detective and the world's most horrible father, brings together a terrible group of people in his apartment: his resentful actress daughter, an angry thug, and a cheated cop. Each one of them has a reason to want revenge.

The Review:
Imagine if Tarantino and Ritchie got together and said let's make a comedy inside an apartment where everyone is trying to kill each other. That's pretty much it. That's the movie.

I love how director Kirill Sokolov wastes no time in getting the action started and doesn't let up until the credits are rolling. There are several crazy plot twists in the story as well as everyone tries to figure out what everyone else's motives are, what they're hiding, and who's on whose side. I think really the fun of the movie is trying to figure it out same as the characters. There's an element of absurdity to this that is a bit reminiscent of Clue, one of the all time greatest cult classics, although not nearly as silly or frenetic.

The other thing that really sells the story for me is how, amidst all the fighting, slashing, and shooting, each of the characters are oddly likable and dare I say it, relatable. I felt bad for the young man who finds himself beaten, chained to the shower stall, and tortured very early on, I mean all he was trying to do was quickly assassinate his girlfriend's father, a man who may or may not have abused her if the girl is to be believed. The dad, who is a cop albeit a dirty one, kind of, just wants his family to like him even though he's made mistakes in life so you side with him a little bit.

Not sure if any of that makes sense, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I actually felt emotional connections with the characters which felt very odd considering one could also just look at them as a bunch of violent and abusive criminals and that says a lot about the writing, the direction, and the performances. Overall, if you're into this sort of thing, the movie is really fun and wildly entertaining. If this movie could punch you in the face it would and you would enjoy every bloody moment of it.
