The Movie: How to Build a Girl
The Director: Coky Giedroyc
The Cast: Beanie Feldstein, Alfie Allen, Paddy Considine, Chris O'Dowd, Emma Thompson
The Story: Johanna Morrigan is a bright, quirky, 16-year-old who uses her colorful imagination to regularly escape her humdrum life in Wolverhampton and live out her creative fantasies.
The Review:
The Beanie Feldstein train has officially kicked into high gear as she tackles her first starring role in this adaptation of the best-selling novel by Caitlin Moran. Award winning director Coky Giedroyc has pulled all of the sass and attitude she can find from the book and splashed it all over this film giving Feldstein a great opportunity to shine. The story is definitely geared towards young women with lots of empowerment, coming of age material, and plenty of growing pains.
With all of that embedded into the story's DNA, I found that I wasn't able to fully engage in the story even while Beanie was throwing everything she had into the character. This really isn't the movie's fault, I blame myself for being a middle aged man more than anything about the movie. That being said, it was still reasonably entertaining and I'm sure it will be a hit with the target demographic.
As I am posting this review, it is available to watch on demand and you might be fortunate enough to live near one of three drive in movie theaters that are showing the movie as well. Check out the movie's official website to see how you can watch the movie.
