The Movie: Shirley
The Director: Josephine Decker
The Cast: Elisabeth Moss, Odessa Young, Michael Stuhlbarg, Logan Lerman
The Story: A famous horror writer finds inspiration for her next book after she and her husband take in a young couple.
The Review:
Elizabeth Moss has earned a reputation as one of the best actors in the business over the last few years. Basically, she can do no wrong and her body of work is something young actors could use as a blueprint for success. Last year, her performance in Her Smell was one of my favorites of the year. Them she comes out the gate in 2020 with yet another stellar performance in The Invisible Man. With all that going on, I was really looking forward to seeing what she could do with a super creepy, thriller type of movie like this one.
The movie starts out interestingly enough with an opening act that sets things up to head down that whacked out creepiness I was looking for. All the characters are sufficiently eccentric and you can tell most of the characters have secrets and secret agendas they are hiding which makes for some juicy possibilities. And that's about where the fun comes to an end. The rest of the movie slogs along at a pace that is unfortunately not very compelling to the point where it ends up being a waste of another excellent performance from Moss.
The Verdict:
Shirley sets up for something big and then falls flat about half way through. Another strong performance from Elizabeth Moss is the only thing that makes this movie worth watching.
