The Review:
When I first saw the trailer for this movie, it quickly became on of my most looked forward to films of the upcoming year. And then the cinema experience came to a screeching halt. Fortunately, the fine folks at Netflix picked the movie up and everyone will get to see what I'm assuming will be one of the better comedies of the year. Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani are great together and their respective comedic styles play off of each other so well.
While Issa Rae is well known as a comic actor, the first time I actually saw her was in The Photograph which is more of a dramatic feature so it was nice to finally see her do her thing in this movie. The last time I saw Nanjiani was in Stuber, a movie where he also had great chemistry with real life buddy Dave Bautista so all this working well together with people might just be a thing for him. Anyway, I really enjoyed watching he two actors both as a duo and individually and especially as two people of color starring together in a fun, crazy romantic comedy.
The story itself isn't really anything earth shattering although it really doesn't need to be. It's basically a reason for Rae and Nanjiani to be funny and, in service of that goal, it does the job just fine. The supporting cast is solid and features Paul Sparks, Kyle Bornheimer, and Anna Camp who of course we all know as one of the original Barden Bellas. What? You don't know what that is? Shame on you and go watch Pitch Perfect right now.
Anyway. The Lovebirds is pretty much what you are expecting and hoping it will be. The movie is genuinely funny and the happy, or not so happy, couple are so much fun to watch. In a time where we could all use a bit of laughter, this movie gives us that. Check it out on Netflix on May 22nd.
