The Review:
If there was a standard playbook for how to make a horror movie, this movie follows it very nicely and what the story lacks in originality it more than makes up for in just being a fun movie to watch. All the classic elements are there from the outcast teen lead who gets bullied by the "cool kids" to the super creepy witch who can do some nasty and gross things to creep you sufficiently on edge. I liked the twists and turns of the story as some backstory is revealed as well as how the witch never seems satisfied with one host making it hard to tell who might be possessed.
Nothing about the movie really blew me away, there's no big shocking moments and it never goes over the top with blood and guts and I have to say that is one of the things I really liked about it. Brett Pierce and Drew T. Pierce, the brotherly tag team of directors, walks a fine line to keep a consistent narrative while leaning heavily on just about everything that works for the horror genre. This is not one of those movies to dive into and try to pull out all kinds of nuanced messaging, it's just a really good time like those classic films you might have found playing at a late night drive-in double feature.
