The Review:
The first ten minutes of this movie is one of the best and scariest horror openings I have seen in a long time. The scene is intense, it's scary, it's creepy, and it pays off with a pretty solid action sequence. The down side to this is that the rest of the movie is more of a slow, dramatic mystery story so I felt there was a bit of a let down after such a fun beginning. The two lead characters, played by Tara Basro and Marissa Anita, are good together as best friends who may not always agree yet they definitely have each other's backs.

As a dark and atmospheric supernatural drama the movie works well enough and the story has a solid premise although I feel like it suffers from a lack of expectation. Everything about this movie is just begging for it to be more of an over the top, gore filled, fright fest and yet it's not. Maybe that's just me going in with the wrong expectation but I really feel like that's what this movie should be. If you're okay with more of a slow burn with plenty of exposition and backstory with a few moments of scares and graphic material then you'll be down with it.

One of the things I really like about the movie is the set design and the overall look of the movie. Once the two ladies get to the small village, the atmosphere and production design is very gothic and everything looks really old, run down, and overgrown. This adds a lot to the dark and twisted vibe and gives a good emphasis to the historical and generational parts of the movie. I'm guessing there's some historical context maybe from local urban legends or dark fairy tales that I'm missing out on as well and the story could hit harder if you know about them or understand them.

The Verdict:
Impetigore is a decent horror movie that didn't quite live up to my expectations although I won't say it's a bad movie either. This is one of those movies you can throw on, kick back, and enjoy without putting too much thought into it.
