The Review:
So many horror movies come and go every year saying they are truly terrifying, extremely scary, and the most thrilling you will see this year. Most of them don't live up to they hype as they end up having maybe a scene or two worth watching and the rest is just sort of there with not much else going on. I would say Metamorphosis is a very solid entry into the genre as it takes the classic possession and exorcist themes we've seen many times before and adds a few twists to keep things interesting.

I was a bit worried that the just under two hour run time would be a bit long for this type of movie and I was pleasantly surprised as director Kim Hong-seon keeps things moving along nicely all the way through. The cast really has a lot to do with that as well with performances that are especially good when the possession episodes start happening. Jang Young-nam is extra creepy and actually quite scary during some of her scenes as the mom of the family and, even though her character is secondary to the husband and his brother, she tends to steal the show every time she's in front of the camera.

Metamorphosis is a very welcome addition to the exorcist sub genre as it adds a few twists while sticking true to the tried and true formula. Korean film makers tend to go very dark and creepy without ever going over the top and this film is no exception. Grab some popcorn, turn off the lights, and check out the movie on Shudder.
