The Review:
The main thing that caught my attention about this movie is that it was directed by Dave Franco and features both Allison Brie and Dan Stevens in primary roles. I'm a fan of all three so this was definitely an intriguing team although my fear is that it would end up being just another generic horror movie with generic characters the likes of which we see rolled out a couple dozen times a year. While most of the movie is just that, I still found it oddly engaging and entertaining basically to the point where I never felt like walking away.
I suppose that's not a ringing endorsement "I didn't turn it off!" but honestly there's not a lot that I can point to that would lead me to say you have to watch this because such and such. Basically this is a decent movie that you probably won't remember much of soon after you've watched it. What I will say is that the story is unique in how the characters in the story are taken advantage of through their use of an Air BNB style website which does open up some interesting scenarios. Who are the mysterious people renting out this house they are staying at and why are they finding hidden cameras? This is all setup so not really spoiler territory and it doesn't turn out like you might be thinking anyway.
It's pretty clean that Franco would like this to be a franchise especially with the extensive shots that play during the credits although I'm not sure if there is enough to warrant future installments. Then again, I'm not sure if there was enough going on with this movie as it is to have warranted it being made so there is that. My final thought on the movie is that it's not bad, it's just sort of there so if you're hard up for horror movie ideas, this is one you can throw on, kick back, and enjoy without thinking too much.
