The Movie: Random Acts of Violence
The Director: Jay Baruchel
The Cast: Jesse Willimas, Jordana Brewster, Jay Baruchel, Niamh Wilson
The Story: A pair of comic book writers begin to notice scary similarities between the character they created and horrific real-life events.
The Review:
A comic book themed horror movie created by Jay Baruchel?! You know I'm down for all of this because comic books and horror movies are two of my favorite things. The idea of the movie is pretty solid with Jesse Williams as Todd, a comic book creator heading to a comic convention with his wife and team when, while on the road, he notices the gory kills he has created are coming to life so to speak in the real world. This begins a slasher mystery thriller that is filled with gore and some pretty effective scares.
One thing I like about the story is how the killer is taking out random people as he recreates the comic book carnage so it's not a standard which friend will die next type story. That being said, no one is safe and the ending goes into some pretty messed up territory with an ending that's got buckets of blood and a few crazy twists and turns. Not all of it works but there's enough going on that I liked to keep me entertained all the way through. As I mentioned, the gore factor is pretty high in this movie so be prepared for that and old school horror fans will appreciate how much of the effects are practical and not CGI.
It was interesting to see Jesse Williams in another horror movie since I really enjoyed his work in The Cabin in the Woods which is one of my all time favorite genre films. There's even a couple scenes that Cabin fans will find a little familiar with one being a stop at an especially creepy gas station with a no nonsense, overly angry attendant flinging insults and rushing them off. Jay Baruchel of course is in the movie and you get exactly what you expect from him which is a heavy dose of awkward nervous energy. Jordana Brewster makes an appearance as Todd's wife although I feel like she really didn't have enough to do except argue every once in a while. I would have liked to have seen a bit more from they're relationship which would have made the ending hit a bit harder.
The Verdict:
Random Acts of Violence is a solid effort all the way around and I hope Jay Baruchel digs deeper into the horror genre, I would love to see what he's capable of within this world. The movie is available on Shudder so watch it now and then check out their other offerings as the streaming service has a Host of great horror movies, exclusives, and classics.
