Tesla - Movie Review

The Movie: Tesla

The Director: Michael Almeryeda

The Cast: Ethan Hawke, Kyle MacLachlan, Eve Hewson, Jim Gaffigan, Hannah Gross, Josh Hamilton

The Story: A freewheeling take on visionary inventor Nikola Tesla, his interactions with Thomas Edison and J.P. Morgan's daughter Anne, and his breakthroughs in transmitting electrical power and light.

The Review:
I have no idea what this movie is supposed to be. Sure, it tells the story of inventor Nikola Tesla but the way the story is told is just so weird and incoherent, it didn't make any sense at all. Visually, the movie is presented with a stage play aesthetic as characters at times perform in front of background images instead of being at a location as well as some other really weird choices. Another example would be the inclusion of an 80's electronic style score and then having Tesla himself do a karaoke rendition of a Tears for Fears song. Yes, you read that correctly. I don't get it either.

Through the entire movie, I was either confused or not interested at all which is sad because the cast is great and I'm usually always a fan of anything Ethan Hawke is a part of. Taking an extremely artistic approach in telling the life of a revolutionary scientist just didn't work for me at all.
