The Review:
Russian horror movies usually go one of two directions. They're either dark and brooding or they're over the top bloody carnage and this movie definitely falls under the former. There isn't much about this movie that's thrilling so I'm going to classify it as a drama horror with supernatural elements to it. As I', sure you can guess, the "boy" ends up being some kind of demonic creature although this is definitely not the typical type of story where an otherworldly monster is just looking to possess and destroy.
There's a lot in this movie about loss and grief and how the two affect relationships, especially in relation to parents who lose their child. With lots of different elements in this movie, it was interesting to me that none of them are really explored with very much depth or in a way that provides any major emotional impact. The mother and father obviously have their issues and disagreements and troubles with their newly adopted demon child but I was never fully invested in who either of them are. Without this type of connection, they entire story loses the engagement that is necessary to really care about what is happening in the movie.
Overall, this is a decent movie and run of the mill horror story and nothing that really sets it apart to stand out from a very crowded field. It's not bad, it's just sort of there.
