Greyhound (2020) - Movie Review

The Movie: Greyhound

The Director: Aaron Schneider

The Cast: Tom Hanks, Elisabeth Shue, Stephen Graham, Matt Helm, Craig Tate, Rob Morgan, Travis Quentin, Jeff Burkes, Matthew Zuk

The Story: Several months after the U.S. entry into World War II, an inexperienced U.S. Navy commander must lead an Allied convoy being stalked by a German submarine wolf pack.

The Review:
This movie was tailor made for the big screen and it was also one of the first big casualties of the pandemic shutting down movie theaters. Watching the movie at home on my TV, such as it is, was definitely not the intended experience and I can see where the big screen and booming sound of a movie theater would have elevated it exponentially. I mean, the visuals are stunning with every effort being made to put you right in the middle of each of the numerous battle scenes.

That being said, this is still a solid movie and of course Tom Hanks always gives a strong Tom Hanks performance. I was hoping it would have had more of an emotional punch but again I think that was supposed to come from the theater experience rather than the actual story. One thought I had while watching the movie was that this would have been great as a marketed adaptation of Battleship since all it really is is one battle after another between the allies and the German submarines.

Greyhound is a good movie that tried to make a big splash but was sunk by the pandemic. Maybe some day we'll get to see this epic war spectacle on the big screen.
