The Review:
If you ever wanted to see a movie that combines Ghostbusters with The Matrix in an 80's style science fiction feature then Shudder has the movie for you! Director Kiah Roache-Turner has put together a really fun throwback that dips its toes into multiple genres and uses a pretty solid formula to come up with an entertaining story. There's nothing groundbreaking here within the story, the effects, or anything else, it's just a good movie that knows exactly what it's trying to be.
I was happy to see Monica Bellucci take on the role of the villain in this movie and she delivered exactly what I was hoping for, a character that was fun to watch without going too far over the top. David Wenham also has a role in the film although in a pretty small role and is there to add star power to the roster of talent which is fine. Ben O'Toole takes on the lead role of a man who discovers he has magical abilities that tie him to a paranormal world he knew nothing about.
I really liked the whole concept of this story and the world the writers created is unique even though it does draw inspiration from several sources. This gave me a comfortable feeling while watching the movie even though it had plenty of originality and surprises. The movie overall is nothing earth shattering, it's just a fun trip through genre film making and you can tell the creators gave it everything they had.
