The Review:
A few years ago Will Wernick wrote and directed a movie called Escape Room, no not the one that came out last year, that Escape Room was actually pretty good. Wernick is back with a new movie called No Escape which is about a group of friends who, you guessed it, go into an escape room for an epic night of adventure. The good news is that I actually enjoyed it! At times it's cheesy and lame but for the most part, it's an entertaining movie that ended up being better than I was expecting.
The setup for this movie is pretty straight forward there are no real surprises as the story is set up through the first act. The cast is full of fun personalities and Wernick spends a good amount of time introducing them and showing off how wild and ready for excitement this group of friends is. The danger level is kicked up a few notches by setting the movie in Moscow where the seedy underworld can be taken full advantage of. Once the escape room antics get started, the puzzles that need to be solved are ones you might find in a Saw movie with each member of the group set into a uniquely perilous trap.
Of course there are narrow escapes and thrills to be had but the festivities really kick into high gear after a couple interesting plot twists even if you do see them coming. I thought the filmmakers could have gone a lot more hardcore with some of the gore and violence, I mean it's already a rated R movie, might as well go all in. Another plus for the movie is that the run time is less than 90 minutes which keeps everything moving along nicely and without unnecessary filler. Overall, this was a surprisingly solid effort and a pretty enjoyable horror thriller.
