Black Box (2020) - Movie Review

The Movie: Black Box

The Director: Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour

The Cast: Mamoudou Athie, Phylicia Rashad, Amanda Christine, Tosin Morohunfola, Charmaine Bingwa, Troy James

The Story: After losing his wife and his memory in a car accident, a single father undergoes an agonizing experimental treatment that causes him to question who he really is.

Black Box is a part of Welcome to the Blumhouse, an anthology of unique and unsettling thrillers showcasing diverse casts led by emerging filmmakers, including several female directors. Produced by Blumhouse and available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video worldwide, the first four films in the series will be released in October 2020, with four more titles set to arrive in 2021.

The story tackles some pretty heavy subject matter when it comes to mental health, memory loss, and dealing with the loss of family members on several different fronts. There are elements of horror, science fiction, and I would say it's mostly a dramatic thriller while doing all of those things pretty well. It's not an overtly scary film although some of the ideas presented in the story could be considered scary if they ever became a reality.

Mamoudou Athie is definitely someone whose career is on the rise and I really enjoyed his performance in this movie especially since he has to take on multiple layers within his character. It was also interesting to see Phylicia Rashad take on the role that she has in this movie. I do have to be a bit vague in my descriptions because there are a couple big twists and turns that are better left untouched until you see them. Overall, I would say this is a good movie that gives a little something for different genre fans to enjoy.
