The Review:
I filled out my ballot while watching this movie which somehow seemed oddly appropriate. The movie is awful as I was expecting to be and maybe even a little more. The first ten to fifteen minutes is kind of entertaining, I laughed a lot during that time, but the schtick wears thin really fast. I get why these movies exist, it's the shock value and pointing out how stupid people can be in this world which is fine and, if that's what you're looking for, you will be at least reasonably entertained.
Sacha Baron Cohen's characters Borat and Bruno are meant to incite reaction and emotion and a strong response whether you like them or not and this movie is very much more of the same. I'm sure people will read this and think I'm crazy because they loved the movie which is fine, they're not wrong. I will say, the movie did hold my attention for the entire one hour and thirty minute run time, minus the credits, because you don't want to miss anything and, other than reading my ballot and researching the propositions and initiatives and candidates, I was full on paying attention.
You know how if you watch sketch comedy shows like Saturday Night Live or In Living Color, each episode will have one or two skits that are hilarious and the rest of the show is mediocre to just flat out bad? That's pretty much how this movie plays out. There are some really funny moments, a few "Holy S**t!" moments, and then a bunch of filler that makes me think this would have been better as 30 minute comedy special instead of a full blown feature film.
The third act of the movie really goes for a knockout blow in several different ways which I am not going to describe here at all because major spoilers if I do. Just know that there are certain things you will look at differently by the time the movie is over and another certain thing is given a brand new origin story that actually makes complete sense and I would believe it if the whole thing wasn't a work of fiction. Or is it?
