Hall - Movie Review

The Movie: Hall

The Director: Francesco Giannini

The Cast: Carolina Bartczak, Yumiko Shaku, Mark Gibson, Bailey Thain, Julian Richings

The Story: When a debilitating sickness spreads across a long hotel hallway, a few scattered victims fight for survival, and try to escape from the dark narrow stretch of isolated carnage.

The Review:
So, the idea of this story is an interesting concept as it takes the viral outbreak scenario and mostly contains it to the hallway and adjoining rooms of a hotel room floor. News clips inform the audience that the outbreak is happening all over the place and not just to the people that the story focuses on. I thought this was an interesting way to give a new look at something we've seen many times over and, for the most part, it is executed pretty well.

Where the movie lost me is in how I didn't feel like there was any reason to care about the characters at all. There's a family who has some major issues and a pregnant woman who is going through some struggles of her own although we're not given enough of them to create any sort of emotional connection which is key to caring about whether they survive the ordeal or not. The run time of the movie is only one hour and 20 minutes and it could have benefitted by adding in about ten minutes more of character development.

Since the movie is very small in scale, there isn't much in the way of special effects and I believe what we do get is all or mostly done without CGI. If there was, it doesn't look like it at all. I did like some of the moments that were super creepy and atmospheric, these are probably the best moments of the movie, there just wasn't enough of them. I would say the movie was just good enough to hold my attention but not quite enough to really make me care about what was happening.
