The Review:
Sometimes you just want to watch a movie that is silly and fun and knows exactly how to not take itself seriously. When I watched the trailer for this movie, I felt like this was going to be exactly that and it most certainly was. Maybe it's because I had no real expectations for this film, but there was really no chance that I wasn't going to have fun watching it. Plus, when you have a cast as stacked as this one and it's a group of actors that can nail this type of material, you really can't go wrong. Except that seeing them here, De Niro, Walken, and Marin, I did feel my advanced years settling in just a little.
Speaking of Robert De Niro, he has definitely found a home in the world of comedy in a similar fashion as Leslie Nielson once did although his comedic style pokes fun at who he has always been known to be as a Hollywood icon whereas Nielson went all the way over into parody in movies like Airplane and The Naked Gun. Still, there are similarities and I'm happy to see such a legendary actor, known for his dangerous and deadly mafia characters, be able to successfully take a turn into family friendly comedy like this movie.
I also have to say that it was great to see Uma Thurman in any type of movie. I know she's been working but, after teaming with Tarantino for several years, her career took some unfortunate turns. It would be nice to see her step back to the forefront of Hollywood features over the next several years. Other supporting roles are filled by the always entertaining Rob Riggle, singer turned actor Laura Marano, and the cinematic royalty that is Jane Seymour.
Getting back to the movie, I loved the steady stream of pranks, gags, spills, falls, crashes, and smashes. All of this type of slapstick comedy is right in director Tim Hill's wheelhouse as well as making sure all of it is as family friendly as possible. There's nothing in this movie that I would think might scare away parents from enjoying it with their kids and there's even a holiday theme that runs through the movie so it could even be played in a lineup of holiday season movies. The War with Grandpa is genuine, silly fun that anyone can enjoy so check it out and have a good time.
