Blood Vessel - Movie Review

The Movie: Blood Vessel

The Director: Justin Dix

The Cast: Nathan Phillips, Alyssa Sutherland, Robert Taylor, Christopher Kirby, Alex Cooke

The Story: Somewhere in the North Atlantic, late 1945, a life raft adrift at sea, and in it, the survivors of a torpedoed hospital ship. With no food, water, or shelter, all seems lost until a seemingly abandoned German minesweeper drifts ominously towards them, giving them one last chance at survival.

The Review:
First off let me say that I love the poster for this movie (see above). The artwork is fantastic and it sets up the story really well, a story about a group of people who are about to go from one danger to another and they have no idea what they're in for. That's also kind of an analogy for the viewer as the story takes a couple very interesting turns and I highly recommend staying away from any spoilers before watching the movie, it'll be that much more fun if you don't know what's coming.

I was really impressed with the look and feel of the movie as it felt much bigger in scale than it actually is and the set design for the vessel is perfectly dark and creepy with all kinds of hidden secrets scattered all over the place. It reminds me a lot of how beat up and used everything is in movies like the Alien franchise although without all of the sci fi tech of course since the story is set in 1945. The claustrophobic layout of the interior of this ship also creates some great tension with lots of dark, creepy corners for scary things to hide in.

The actual story is pretty straightforward with diverse group of people thrown together, presented with danger, and then the fight for survival. Director and co-writer Justin Dix thankfully doesn't spend a ton of time on character background and unnecessary exposition, there's just enough so we know who each person is and then the mayhem starts. I also liked the fact that I didn't know who might or might not survive, if anyone at all and seriously, no one is safe so all bets are off.

The Verdict:
Blood Vessel takes the classic WWII setting to the high seas and sinks it into the depths of monsters and demons. Dripping with blood and scares around every corner, this movie does more than enough to keep genre fans satisfied.
