The Movie: Run
The Director: Aneesh Chaganty
The Cast: Sarah Paulson, Kiera Allen, Pat Healy, Sarah Sohn
The Story: A homeschooled teenager begins to suspect her mother is keeping a dark secret from her.
The Review:
Aneesh Chaganty's first feature film was 2018's Searching which is a highly effective, tension filled thriller starring John Cho that should have received a lot more attention and acclaim for both the director and the actor. For people familiar with the film, it unfortunately went under the radar although it did succeed in building a high level of expectation that the director might provide more of the same intense storytelling with this new movie
The idea of this film is pretty interesting and Chaganty brings some original ideas to the horror genre while totally skewing the mother daughter bond and relationship. Unfortunately, the story is predictable and leaves little to no intensity which I think would have been the key to this movie working. I was expecting something much darker and a deeper dive into horror but it was more of a drama with some thriller elements and a couple sequences that would have felt more comfortable in a comedy than anything this movie was trying to be.
What I did like was the effort turned in by both Sarah Paulson and Kiera Allen as mother and daughter respectively. Allen especially has a tough task as her character is confined to a wheel chair for mobility which creates a lot of difficult situations as she tries to escape the predicament she finds herself in. I also have to give a shout out to Pat Healy who I love to see in any movie, even if it's playing a small part like the one he has in this one. If you've never watched Cheap Thrills, you should do that as soon as you're done reading this review.
The Verdict:
Run is an okay movie with a decent story although it doesn't come close to the level of quality and intensity of Aneesh Chaganty's previous film. I would say this is a solid rental which is good because that's pretty much all we have right now without theaters to go to.
