The Review:
Scott Adkins has had a prolific career as a martial action star although I don't believe I have ever seen him take on a role quite like this one. The story is very comical and most of the movie is seen from an in game perspective that features all of the fun and of the 16 bit arcade era as well as all of the technologies shortcomings. Characters in the game act and behave in ways that you would have controlled them in games of the era which is where a lot of the comedy comes from. Adkins is especially good at adapting his fighting style to fit this mold and all of it looks great.
The movie is intentionally cheesy and corny as it's supposed to have the look and feel of an early 90's straight to video science fiction story and for the most part the film makers pull it off. Adkins' performance is pretty much exactly what I expected and it was interesting to see Lashana Lynch, who most will remember as Carol Danver's best friend in Captain Marvel, as a villain alongside John Hannah who has also had a turn in the Marvel universe with a role in Agents of Shield. This movie may not be on the level of a Ready Player One but if you are ready for a trip down nostalgia lane when it comes to classic console video games, you'll probably give it a high score.
